If you’ve read a few of our write-ups, you’ll probably notice that we do quite a bit of work with the VA. Over half of our install techs are veterans themselves, and we have a soft spot for these heroes. Far too often, aging veterans pass away from disabilities or illnesses they sustained fighting for our freedom.
The VA HISA Grant (Home Improvement and Structural Alterations Grant) is a powerful program designed to help veterans with disabilities modify their homes for better accessibility. It covers ramps, grab bars, and most importantly—bathroom modifications that improve safety and ease of use. In early May, Sue called the VA hoping to access this grant for her 94-year-old father-in-law, Don. His bathroom featured an old, dangerous clawfoot tub, and Don frequently lost his balance trying to step in and out.

For Don, an acrylic insert was the perfect solution. The plan was straightforward: We’d expand the footprint of the old clawfoot tub to accommodate a shower seat, fur out the back wall, and drywall right over the existing window. On the left, where HVAC registers were located, we’d build a false wall to contain a 48″x34″ walk-in shower. The remaining space would be finished with acrylic or vinyl panels for a clean, low-maintenance result.

Sue was hoping for an immediate start, but we were booked over three months out. For a stone install, the materials alone would’ve taken eight weeks to arrive. Tom made a handshake agreement: If they promised flexibility, we’d try to squeeze the job in between larger projects.
Three weeks later, Shannon Boyer arrived. There were a couple of hiccups we addressed quickly. First, Sue had returned to North Carolina and handed the project off to her brother-in-law, John, who hadn’t spoken to Tom and wasn’t clear on the agreed scope of work. One quick phone call cleared that up. Secondly, furring out the wall reduced the space enough that the 34″-deep shower came uncomfortably close to the existing toilet. We solved this by using an offset flange to reposition the toilet further away.

The final result may not be showroom quality, but it’s fully functional and, most importantly, safe. Thanks to the VA HISA Grant, the family incurred little out-of-pocket expense. For their situation, we truly believe this was the perfect solution. Don, Sue, & John all thanked us and said they loved it.
