Gloria called Syracuse Bath Pros on behalf of her husband, John—a 94-year-old Army veteran living with advanced Alzheimer’s. John had increasing difficulty stepping in and out of their old tub, and safety had become a growing concern. Thankfully, the couple had secured approval for the VA’s HISA (Home Improvements and Structural Alterations) Grant, which offers up to $6,800 for veterans with service-connected disabilities and up to $2,000 for non-service-connected cases. John qualified for the full allotment.

The HISA Grant is one of the only legitimate federal programs available for home remodeling aimed at improving accessibility, and while VA bureaucracy has a reputation for delays, our local representatives in Upstate NY are a rare exception. In Syracuse, Susan Alguire has built a reputation for compassion and efficiency. In Buffalo, Shane Lowe is the go-to contact, and he’s just as helpful and expedient. Veterans start by getting a prescription for home improvements from their VA doctor, then work with these reps in the prosthetics department to move the process forward.

After receiving bids from a few companies, Gloria met with Tom Wolff from Bath Pros. She appreciated our approach—no pressure, straight answers, and high-quality materials that don’t cut corners. While the grant could have covered a basic fiberglass insert, Gloria wanted something more substantial and lasting—something that added value to the home as well as improving John’s day-to-day comfort.

We designed a solution that met all the grant’s accessibility requirements but used higher-end, cultured stone components for durability and aesthetic appeal. Once Gloria made her decision, we collected a 40% deposit and got her on the calendar, roughly eight weeks out.

Installation was led by Ricky Boyer—Army veteran and one of our most trusted technicians—alongside his wife and helper, Stacey. The job came with its challenges. With only one bathroom in the house and no nearby facilities, timing and coordination were crucial. Electrical modifications were needed, and Ricky handled them seamlessly. Despite the tight quarters and a few off-color quips from John (which we won’t publish here, but did get a laugh), the project moved along smoothly.
