Anna called in early July, looking for a way to make her bathroom safer and more accessible. She was worried about tripping while stepping in and out of the tub and wanted a solution that would give her peace of mind. After a brief phone conversation to discuss her needs, our project manager, Tom Wolff, scheduled a time to meet in person. A few days later, they sat down together to go over all the options. With the design in mind, they reviewed financing options to find a plan that fit her budget and, after discussing everything in detail and making sure she felt confident in her choices, Anna decided to move forward. With the paperwork signed, we locked in her spot on the installation calendar—just in time to have her new shower before the new year.

Anna had lived in her home for 30 years. It was the house where she and her husband had built their life together—raising children, hosting family gatherings, and making decades of memories. But after her husband passed away a few years earlier, the responsibility of maintaining the house had fallen entirely on her. He had always been the one to handle repairs and renovations, making the big decisions about their home. Now, faced with a bathroom that no longer felt safe, she had to make this choice on her own.

She had been putting it off for a while. The high walls of her old cast iron tub made it difficult to step in and out, and every time she showered, she worried about slipping. But the idea of a major renovation felt overwhelming. Would it take weeks? Would unexpected problems pop up? She just wanted a safer space without turning her home upside down.

When our install technician, Vincent Aponte, arrived at her house, he walked her through the plan one more time. She was excited but nervous, still a little unsure if she had made the right choice. Vincent reassured her that by the time the project was finished, she’d have a shower that was not only safe but also updated.

First, Vinny and his helper, John, carefully removed the surrounding walls. Then they tackled the heavy cast iron tub, managing to get it out in one piece—a small victory in itself. But just when it seemed like everything was going smoothly, they uncovered something unexpected.

Underneath where the tub had been, there was a major problem. Instead of draining properly into a waste line, Anna’s bathtub had been emptying into a pit beneath her slab foundation. At some point, there had been a wrought iron pipe connecting it to the main waste line, but over the years, it had corroded completely. What was left was a shallow dirt pit filled with about eight inches of thick, stagnant sludge.

While it added about a day to the timeline, the team carefully tied into the existing waste line and reconnected the wet space so it would drain properly. Once that was taken care of, the real transformation could begin.

With the unexpected plumbing issue behind them, the rest of the installation went smoothly. The team set the stone composite shower floor in mortar, ensuring a solid, level foundation. For the walls, Anna chose cultured stone slabs in a warm “Butternut” finish with an imitation subway tile pattern. It was a classic, timeless look that brightened up the space.

To maximize safety and comfort, the Bath Pros team installed two corner shelves, two sturdy safety bars, and an integrated, rounded-corner seat, allowing Anna to shower while seated if needed. Finally, a simple yet elegant shower curtain was added to keep water contained and give the space a finished look.

It was more than just a remodel—it was about helping Anna feel safe and comfortable in her home again. And for us, that’s what makes the job worthwhile.
