This Liverpool NY bathroom remodel and walk-in shower conversion included removing an oversized garden tub and aging walk-in shower, installing a large custom cultured stone shower system with multiple shower heads, upgrading plumbing and electrical systems, installing luxury vinyl tile flooring, and integrating a new washer/dryer combination unit into the bathroom layout.
Projects like this are common in homes throughout Liverpool, Clay, and the greater Syracuse area, where large master bathrooms built in the early 2000s often include garden tubs that end up rarely being used.
Cody and his wife Alyssa had already spent time researching remodeling companies before reaching out to Bath Pros. They had reviewed several project write-ups and browsed our bathroom remodeling portfolio featuring real projects across Central New York before scheduling a consultation.
Their home sat in a quiet Liverpool neighborhood, and they were looking for a contractor who could deliver a high-end remodel using durable materials rather than the acrylic systems commonly marketed throughout the industry.

Project Overview
Location: Liverpool NY
Project Type: Full Master Bathroom Remodel
Shower Type: Custom multi-head walk-in shower
Shower Material: Cultured stone (Onyx Collection)
Scope:
- garden tub removal
- oversized walk-in shower installation
- washer/dryer plumbing relocation
- luxury vinyl tile flooring
- custom double vanity installation
- ventilation upgrades
Comparing Materials
Before contacting Bath Pros, Cody had already met with another well-known Central New York remodeling company.
The proposal relied on a composite material often marketed as a “Corian-like” system. While products like this can perform adequately, they typically consist of acrylic and resin blends that many homeowners find visually similar to traditional plastic shower surrounds. Homeowners comparing different shower materials can also read our breakdown of acrylic vs tile vs solid surface shower systems.
The quoted price for that installation exceeded $50,000, yet Cody still felt the material didn’t match the level of finish he wanted for the space.
At Bath Pros, we typically recommend solid cultured stone systems like The Onyx Collection, which are manufactured using alumina trihydrate and polymer resins to create a rigid, durable shower surface.
These systems offer a grout-free surface while maintaining the solid feel homeowners expect from premium shower materials.

A Fully Custom Shower Design
When our owner Tom Wolff visited the home to review the project, Cody already had a clear vision.
The existing bathroom included:
• a large tile-covered garden tub
• a smaller walk-in shower that had begun leaking
• roughly 120 square feet of total floor space
The plan was to remove both the tub and the shower and replace them with a large custom walk-in shower spanning the entire wall.
The finished design included:
• one overhead rain shower head
• two traditional wall-mounted shower heads
• a separate handheld shower wand
At over 30 square feet, this was significantly larger than a typical residential shower.
The custom shower base alone weighed nearly 500 pounds, and moving it upstairs during installation required careful coordination by our crew.
Garden Tub Removal and Walk-In Shower Installation in Liverpool NY
Large garden tubs were common in homes built throughout Liverpool and Clay in the early 2000s, but many homeowners find they rarely use them. Removing a garden tub and replacing it with a large walk-in shower is now one of the most common bathroom remodeling projects we perform in Liverpool NY and the surrounding Syracuse suburbs.. By converting unused space into a larger shower footprint, homeowners can dramatically improve both the functionality and visual openness of the room.

Expanding the Bathroom’s Functionality
Cody also wanted to repurpose the plumbing from the original shower area to install one of the newer all-in-one washer/dryer combination units.
These systems are becoming more common in modern homes because they run on standard 120-volt power and require no external venting, making them easier to integrate into existing layouts.
While we had not installed that specific unit before, the design actually simplified the plumbing layout and gave the homeowners additional flexibility.
The rest of the remodel included:
• replacing the tile flooring with luxury vinyl tile (LVT)
• installing a skirted American Standard Cadet toilet
• running dedicated wiring for a bidet seat
• installing a 72-inch Bertch Alden hardwood vanity
• fabricating a custom cultured stone double-sink vanity top
After reviewing selections and refining the design details, Cody signed the contract and placed the standard 40% deposit, securing an installation date roughly ten weeks out.

Installation Begins
When installation day arrived, Vincent Aponte, his assistant John, and Operations Manager Josh Brodnicki arrived early to begin the project.
Before any demolition began, the team walked through the entire scope of work with the homeowner to confirm:
• working hours
• installation sequence
• materials and fixtures
• project timeline
We believe setting clear expectations at the beginning of a project helps prevent misunderstandings later.
Demolition and Structural Preparation
The demolition phase took nearly two full days.
Removing the old tile-covered garden tub deck alone required significant effort, and transporting the massive custom shower base upstairs was easily one of the more physically demanding parts of the installation. Hidden structural issues during demolition are not uncommon during demolition, which is why we carefully inspect framing before installing a new shower system.
Running new electrical lines for the washer/dryer unit and bidet seat also presented a challenge.
The attic was packed with blown-in insulation, which can make routing new wiring extremely time-consuming. Fortunately, the previous tub had been installed with two dedicated electrical circuits, which allowed us to repurpose existing wiring rather than running entirely new lines.
This saved both time and unnecessary disruption to the finished ceiling below.

Minor Hiccups Along the Way
As with most large remodeling projects, a few unexpected issues came up during installation.
When the custom vanity arrived, we discovered that the sink measurements used when ordering the first vanity top were slightly incorrect.
Rather than attempt a workaround, we reordered the correct top and installed the vanity base while waiting for the replacement to arrive.
Small adjustments like this are fairly common on larger custom projects.
A Ventilation Surprise
After the remodel was completed, the homeowner contacted us with a concern.
The ventilation fan we had relocated into the shower area was creating negative airflow, which was pushing steam out of the bathroom and causing condensation in a nearby room.
Rather than moving the fan again — which would have required opening finished drywall — we installed a second ventilation fan on the same circuit to balance the airflow.
This adjustment resolved the condensation issue.

A Cold Weather Plumbing Issue
About a week later, during a particularly cold stretch of weather, the homeowner noticed reduced flow from the rain shower head.
We discovered that the supply line running through the attic had briefly frozen.
Fortunately, the plumbing was installed using PEX piping, which is far more tolerant of freezing conditions than copper. The line expanded slightly but did not crack or burst.
We corrected the issue by improving insulation around the pipe and repositioning the line within the insulated portion of the attic space.
No permanent damage occurred.

Following Up
We recently checked back in with Cody and Alyssa to make sure everything was still working as expected.
They reported that the bathroom has been functioning perfectly and they remain extremely happy with the finished space.
We include stories like this in our case studies because even well-planned remodeling projects occasionally encounter small challenges. What matters most is how those issues are handled and resolved.
The Finished Bathroom
The finished bathroom now features:
• a large multi-head walk-in shower
• luxury vinyl tile flooring
• a custom hardwood vanity with double sinks
• integrated washer/dryer unit
• upgraded ventilation and electrical systems
The transformation turned what was once an inefficient layout into a highly functional master bathroom designed for daily use.
