Donna and John had been retired for a few years and weren’t planning on moving again. Their two-story split-level home in Clinton, NY, was in great shape overall, but the bathroom was starting to show its age. The tub in particular had become a concern—Donna found it increasingly difficult to step over the lip safely, and they wanted something easier to navigate as they aged in place. After a quick call to talk through goals and budget, Tom Wolff drove out the very next day for a site inspection.
When he arrived, the house was buzzing with other contractors—attic insulation work was underway, and it looked like new windows were being installed throughout the home. Tom inspected the bathroom and found no structural issues, which meant we had a clean slate. They sat down together to review samples, talk through the process, and lay out the options.
Donna immediately gravitated toward the Samuel Mueller collection. She loved the way it looked and felt like real stone, and when we explained how it compared to traditional acrylic, they canceled the rest of their remodeling appointments on the spot. Most of the companies they had contacted were pushing overpriced acrylic, while we were able to offer cultured stone for about the same price point.
That’s one of the reasons we stay booked out—our value proposition speaks for itself. Donna and John didn’t want to wait too long, so they put down a 40% deposit and secured a spot on our calendar ten weeks out.
Vincent Aponte, our lead installer, was happy to see this one land on his schedule—it was just 11 minutes from his house. “Papi, you guys need to do more advertising in Utica!” And he’s not wrong.
The scope of work involved removing the old tub and installing a walk-in shower complete with integrated safety bars, a slim flip-up seat rated for 400 lbs, and a shower door. We also agreed to replace an old window located inside the wet space—a tricky detail, but one we sometimes take on. Outside the shower, we were set to replace an over-the-wall medicine cabinet and swap out the vanity fixture.
However, when we arrived, the homeowners asked us to install a recessed medicine cabinet instead. That posed two problems:
A) The cabinet was huge—36″ wide—and would require cutting across three stud bays, which could lead to major rerouting of plumbing and electrical.
B) It wasn’t in our original scope, and taking it on would’ve delayed our next job. We explained the situation and politely declined. While we aim to be flexible, we also have to protect the integrity of our schedule.
Aside from that hiccup, the job went off without issue. There was a minor scratch on the shower door glass, which we replaced under warranty—though that did take about six weeks to arrive. Additionally, after seeing the 400lb flip-up seat in person, John asked if we could swap it for a slimmer 300lb version. We were happy to accommodate.
In the end, the transformation was stunning. The space is now safer, easier to use, and beautifully updated.
