Case Study: Samuel Mueller Shower Pan Discoloration – What Happened, How We Fixed It, and Why We Switched to Onyx Collection

We recently heard from a previous customer in the Clinton, NY area about an issue with a Samuel Mueller solid-surface shower pan we installed roughly six months prior. Visible staining and spotting had developed across the floor of the shower. At first glance, it looked like the type of damage caused by harsh or non-pH-neutral cleaners—something the manufacturer specifically warns against. But the homeowners, who had always been honest and easy to work with, insisted they followed the cleaning instructions to the letter.

And truthfully, we believed them. So we began digging.

Samuel Mueller Shower Pan Performance

The issue we encountered involved a Samuel Mueller shower pan installed as part of a full tub-to-shower conversion. Shower pans are the structural base of a grout-free shower system and are responsible for supporting weight, directing water to the drain, and maintaining long-term durability. In this case the Samuel Mueller shower pan developed discoloration that required the base to be removed and replaced. While not every installation experiences this problem, it highlights how important pan construction and material thickness are when evaluating shower systems.

Trying—and Failing—to Get Support From the Manufacturer

Our first step was to contact Samuel Mueller’s warranty/service department. We sent emails. No response. We called several times. Our Operations Manager, Josh Brodnicki, was never able to get a human being on the phone.

It quickly became clear that getting direct support was going to be difficult.

This experience, unfortunately, wasn’t new for us. For those who know our company, you probably already know we stopped using Samuel Mueller products about a year ago. That decision was based on a mix of factors we personally encountered—longer lead times, price fluctuations, occasional material issues, and challenges connecting with support. Today (as of 10/28/25), we exclusively install Onyx Collection cultured stone. It’s manufactured in Kansas, not overseas, and we speak with real people—by name—every time we call. More importantly, their products have performed well for us. We discuss broader differences between these systems in our Samuel Mueller vs Onyx Collection comparison.

Still, none of that mattered to this homeowner. Telling them “we don’t use Samuel Mueller anymore” wasn’t an answer. And replacing their pan with a new Onyx unit would require a full demo down to the studs. That was not a fair or realistic solution for them.

Samuel Mueller Eventually Responds… Kind Of

Months later—after emailing them again, this time under their Transolid email address (the residential brand they sell directly to consumers under) —we finally got a reply. It read:

“We recently had a similar claim, and it was denied because it was found that too much mortar was used during the installation process. However, I suggested you contact your original point of purchase to see if they are willing to provide a different answer. Have a great day!!! Thank you!!!”

Yes… really.
Three exclamation points and everything.

Their claim? “Too much mortar was used.”

We reviewed the manufacturer’s installation instructions during our troubleshooting process. For customer reference, a copy of the instructions we used is available here. These instructions are the property of Samuel Mueller/Transolid and are shared solely for informational purposes. In our reading of their document, there is no specific warning about excessive mortar. The instructions describe applying thin-set mortar to achieve proper support and levelness.

If a pan is installed without adequate mortar, it can flex, bow, or drain improperly. And while some materials can react during curing, that typically happens in the first 24–48 hours. Not six months later. Additionally, solid-surface pans are intended to be non-porous. If you’re researching how these systems are constructed, our guide explaining Samuel Mueller shower base materials breaks down the different base types used in Mueller shower systems.

Based on our inspection and installation records, the issue was not related to installation or maintenance. The shower pan was installed correctly and performed as expected initially, but discoloration later emerged from within the material itself and could not be cleaned or corrected. In our professional judgment, this failure pattern is consistent with a manufacturing defect rather than installer error. We’ve encountered similar situations across Central New York, including homes in the Utica area, where homeowners often reach out after being told the issue is cosmetic despite clear evidence of a material-related failure.

So, for any homeowners reading this wondering why we no longer use Samuel Mueller products… this is why. Compare that response to the Onyx Collection team, who consistently give us real answers, real support, and actual accountability. Don’t believe us? Finding a Real Solution for the Homeowner

Since Samuel Mueller offered no viable path forward, we explored every possible alternative to avoid forcing the homeowners into a full demolition. We contacted multiple refinishing and re-glazing companies to determine whether the surface damage could be professionally repaired.

One of the highest-rated re-glazing companies in the region agreed to inspect the unit. Upon arrival, however, they refused to perform the work after examining the condition and material of the Samuel Mueller pan. Their technician explained that the solid-surface composition and the type of discoloration present made the outcome too unpredictable and the finish too likely to fail prematurely. In their view, re-glazing was not a viable long-term solution.

At that point, the only path left was the one no contractor ever wants to deliver to a customer: a full tear-out and replacement.

Standing Behind the Project—Even When the Manufacturer Won’t

Even though we cannot say with certainty what caused the issue, and despite not receiving a workable solution from the manufacturer, we chose to take full responsibility for restoring the homeowner’s bathroom.

We are now scheduling a complete replacement of the shower system with a brand-new, American-made Onyx Collection shower base and matching cultured stone walls. The project will be performed at no cost to the homeowner.

It’s the right thing to do, and frankly, it’s what we would want a remodeling company to do for us.

The Honest Truth About Manufacturer Limitations

This case underscores a reality most homeowners never see: a contractor is only as strong as the manufacturers behind them. We can install everything by the book, follow every guideline, and still end up stuck if a manufacturer is unable to provide clear direction or support when something unexpected happens.

That’s exactly what happened here.

The manufacturer’s response suggested the issue may have been related to installation conditions, even though:

  • Their own instructions do not warn against “too much mortar,”
  • Based on our experience, mortar-burn issues occur during curing, not six months later, and a solid-surface pan should not absorb or telegraph anything from beneath it.

In contrast, every time we’ve contacted Onyx, a real person answers the phone, reviews the issue, and helps us find a real solution. That level of partnership matters, and this case is a perfect example of why we made the decision to move away from Samuel Mueller permanently.

Samuel Mueller Shower System Overview

The Samuel Mueller shower system typically includes a prefabricated shower pan, wall panels, corner trim pieces, and optional accessories such as niches or shelves. The company markets these components as a complete grout-free shower system designed to replace traditional tile showers while reducing installation time.

Why Some Homeowners Still Prefer Samuel Mueller Wall Panels

One reason some homeowners still choose Samuel Mueller wall panels is their appearance. Among grout-free shower wall systems, Samuel Mueller panels are known for their pronounced marbling patterns, which can closely resemble natural stone and create visual depth that many other panel systems do not offer. Several of the company’s product lines feature decorative finishes designed to mimic the movement and character of natural stone slabs.

While the panels are generally thinner than those used in systems like The Onyx Collection, the decorative surface patterns can be very striking. For homeowners researching these systems in more detail, our guide explaining Samuel Mueller wall panels and how the different panel collections compare breaks down the materials and construction methods used across the various product lines.

In particular, the marbled finishes available in certain Samuel Mueller collections provide a level of visual movement and stone-like character that is difficult to replicate with most other solid-panel shower materials currently on the market. For homeowners prioritizing aesthetics and dramatic stone patterns, this is one area where Samuel Mueller wall panels stand out.

Update: We Reinstalled the Entire Shower

It took us a few months to custom order all the materials, as the Onyx Collection is frequently backlogged by a few months, but we did come back and reinstall the entire shower for these homeowners. This particular installation features a 60″x34″ Onyx Collection shower pan in ‘Pepper’, with a bench seat, corner caddy, and additional recessed caddy for extra storage. We matched the color of the cove trim along the ceiling to match the floor and accessories. We are all very pleased with the results. More importantly, we are confident we won’t experience similar issues.

Final Thoughts

While this issue involved a specific installation and may not represent every Samuel Mueller product, the experience highlights how important manufacturer support can be when problems arise. This wasn’t the outcome we hoped for—but it is the outcome we’re committed to standing behind.

Our Clinton homeowner now has a brand-new Onyx shower system installed at no additional expense. We took care of all demolition, disposal, installation, and finishing work … and, we’ll stay in touch after completion to ensure everything performs exactly as it should.
