This Baldwinsville NY bathroom remodel included the completion of a partially demolished walk-in shower, installation of a custom cultured stone shower system, integration of a freestanding soaking tub, construction of a 72-inch double vanity, and corrections to several layout and measurement issues discovered during the installation process.

Like many of the bathroom remodels we complete throughout Syracuse and Central New York, this project began with homeowners interviewing several contractors — including a few of the heavily advertised “one-day bath” companies operating in the area. The photos below document the actual installation of this Baldwinsville bathroom remodel, including the walk-in shower, freestanding tub, and custom vanity installation.

Jim and Barb ultimately contacted Bath Pros looking for something different: a traditional remodel done carefully, without sales pressure and without shortcuts.

Jim was no stranger to construction. In fact, he had built the Baldwinsville home himself decades earlier and spent most of his career working as a contractor. For years he handled nearly every improvement project in the house personally.

But following a recent medical diagnosis, the bathroom remodel he had started was no longer something he could finish himself.

A Remodel Already in Progress

When our owner Tom Wolff arrived for the initial consultation, the bathroom was already partially dismantled.

Jim had removed the original shower and opened the walls down to the studs. Some of the plumbing had even been roughed in ahead of time. Situations like this can sometimes complicate a remodel, but in this case it actually gave us something valuable: a clear look at the structure inside the walls.

That kind of visibility is important because the true condition of a bathroom often isn’t obvious until demolition begins. In fact, we’ve documented projects where structural floor joist problems were only discovered after the bathroom was opened up, requiring additional framing work before the new shower system could be installed.

Fortunately, the floor structure was accessible from the garage below. That allowed us to inspect the joists directly and confirm that the new shower base would have adequate support without requiring additional framing reinforcement.

When the Homeowner Is Also a Contractor

Working with retired contractors can sometimes be a blessing and a challenge at the same time.

On one hand, they understand the realities of construction — material delays, design adjustments, and the occasional surprise behind the walls.

On the other hand, many of them remember completing entire remodels decades ago with nothing more than a pickup truck, a helper, and a long weekend. That perspective can sometimes lead to unrealistic expectations about modern timelines and pricing.

At Bath Pros, we typically estimate three to five days for a wet space installation and seven to ten days for a full bathroom remodel, depending on the scope of work. That schedule allows room for the kinds of small hiccups that are common in remodeling projects — supplier delays, weather interruptions, or minor structural adjustments — while keeping communication clear with the homeowner.

Thankfully, Jim understood the process and was great to work with.

Designing the New Bathroom

Barb had a very specific vision for the finished space.

She had selected a freestanding soaking tub she found online, along with vanity bases and hardware sourced from Wayfair. The couple had also already installed luxury vinyl tile flooring, which we frequently recommend because of its durability and moisture resistance in bathroom environments.

The new design included:

• a custom walk-in shower
• a freestanding tub
• a 72-inch double vanity
• updated plumbing fixtures throughout

After reviewing our cultured stone shower system options and color samples, Barb designed a custom shower and vanity top configuration using materials from The Onyx Collection.

The order was placed the very next day.

Installing the Walk-In Shower

Our lead installer Vinny Aponte and his assistant John arrived early Monday morning to begin the installation.

The shower installation moved quickly once the base was positioned and leveled. The cultured stone wall panels were installed and sealed, creating a durable grout-free shower system designed to resist mold and simplify long-term maintenance.

For many homeowners, this type of material provides a practical alternative to traditional tile showers.

A Problem With the Finishes

As the installation progressed, a small design issue began to appear.

Barb had selected brushed nickel fixtures for the shower, while the freestanding tub arrived with brushed gold hardware. The vanity hardware sourced online was yet another variation of gold.

This is one of the reasons we typically recommend sticking with a single fixture finish throughout a bathroom remodel. Even subtle variations between brushed metals can become very noticeable once everything is installed in the same space.

Rather than leave the room looking mismatched, Vinny made a quick trip to a local supplier and sourced matching brushed nickel hardware to unify the design.

The Challenge of Online Fixtures

The freestanding tub introduced another small complication.

When it arrived on site, the installation kit was missing several key pieces of mounting hardware.

Situations like this are unfortunately common when fixtures are sourced from third-party retailers.

Fortunately, our team was able to source the correct installation flange locally — thanks to Rachel at FW Webb — allowing us to keep the project moving without significant delay.

A Measurement Issue

The final complication surfaced when it came time to install the vanity top.

The custom 72-inch cultured stone vanity top had been manufactured based on standard cabinet dimensions. However, the Wayfair vanity bases turned out to be slightly outside typical industry sizing.

The top didn’t fit.

Measurement issues like this are one of the reasons remodeling contractors typically prefer sourcing cabinetry from known manufacturers whose specifications match standard countertop dimensions.

To keep the project moving forward, we placed an emergency reorder with Onyx that same day.

Lead time was about three weeks.

Finishing the Project

To help smooth things over while the new vanity top was being manufactured, our Operations Manager Josh Brodnicki personally visited the home and addressed a few unrelated plumbing items at no charge.

Once the correctly sized vanity top arrived, installation went smoothly and the bathroom finally came together exactly as Jim and Barb had envisioned.

The Finished Bathroom

The completed remodel features:

• a custom cultured stone walk-in shower
• a freestanding soaking tub
• a 72-inch double vanity with custom Onyx Collection top
• luxury vinyl tile flooring throughout

The finished space feels open, bright, and far more functional than the original bathroom.

And like every project featured on the Bath Pros website, the photographs shown here are real installations — not stock images.

Every image was taken on site by a project manager or installer during the actual job.
